Bradoon bits: An indispensable part of the double bridle
The double bridle, equipped with a curb bit and leverage, always requires a careful combination with a bradoon bit, which is placed above the curb bitin the horse's mouth. To avoid excessive pressure, bradoon bitsare generally designed to be slimmer than conventional snaffle bits. The bit rings are also slightly smaller to avoid hitting the curb bit's shanks.
The use of two reins allows the rider to give independent rein aids for the curb bit and the bradoon bit. In this way, the pressure on the curb rein can be adjusted as needed. Nevertheless, the main effect should always be on the bradoon bit.
A special double bridle, consisting of a wide noseband without a flash strap, a browband, and a separate strap for the bradoon bit, is also necessary.
The different variants
Bradoon bitsare available in the same variants as snaffle bits. The decision between a single-jointed or double-jointed bit should be made individually, often choosing the preferred variant of the normal snaffle. The double-jointed bit applies broad pressure to the tongue, while the single-jointed bit applies more pressure to the sides of the tongue.
Bit rings can be designed as eggbutt or loose ring. Eggbutt rings prevent the corners of the mouth from being pinched, while horses can temporarily evade stronger pressure with loose rings.
