Mane Comb & Sweat Scraper – The Basics for a Clean Mane and Shiny Coat

You know the feeling: after a ride, the coat is sticky, the mane is matted, and it needs to lie neatly before a competition. That's exactly why we have the right tools here. A good mane comb, a sharp pulling comb, and a grippy sweat scraper belong in every grooming kit – whether you're a recreational rider or regularly compete in the arena or show jumping course.

Here you'll find models for all coat types: from fine thoroughbreds to densely coated Tinkers. We also carry brands that riders have trusted for years – including Waldhausen, Haas, Effol, KERBL, Covalliero, and other selected equestrian manufacturers.

Mane comb, pulling comb, or sweat scraper – what do you really need?

At first glance, these small helpers look similar. But in use, they make a big difference:

  • Mane comb:for daily care. Untangles knots, smooths the mane, and creates a clean part. There are variants made of metal, plastic, or wood – each has its strengths.
  • Pulling comb:your tool for gently thinning and shortening the mane. Particularly practical before competitions when the mane needs to lie neatly without you having to cut it with scissors.
  • Sweat scraper:indispensable after training or in the rain. It removes water, sweat, and loose dirt from the coat – faster than any towel and gentle on the skin.

Stable tip: If you thoroughly cool down your horse after riding, the sweat scraper also helps the hair dry faster. Afterward, the dandy brushcomes into play – and the coat shines again.

Which material suits your horse?

For mane combs, you generally have the choice between metal, plastic, and wood. Metal combs are robust, glide well through dense manes, and last forever. Plastic is light, inexpensive, and ideal for on the go. Wooden combs feel pleasant on sensitive skin – if you prefer natural, this is the choice for you.

Sweat scrapers are available with plastic or rubber edges. Rubber is particularly gentle and adapts to the horse's contour – perfect for thin-skinned horses. A hard plastic edge, on the other hand, removes more water at once and is the better choice for dense winter coats. In addition, it's worth taking a look at our curry combs– they help loosen dirt before the actual brushing.

What to look for when buying

  • Grip:The handle should sit securely in your hand, even with wet hands.
  • Workmanship:No sharp edges, no burrs – otherwise it won't be good for your horse.
  • Tooth spacing:Close teeth for fine manes, wider for thick long hair.
  • Cleaning:Models made of plastic or metal are easiest to keep clean under running water.

If you're completely stocking up your grooming kit, also check out our mane brushes– they complement the comb perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mane Combs & Sweat Scrapers

How often should I comb my horse's mane?

Ideally, comb it briefly before each ride – that's perfectly sufficient. Daily vigorous combing can break the hair. For matted areas, first untangle with your fingers, then with the comb.

What is the difference between a mane comb and a pulling comb?

The mane comb grooms and untangles. The pulling comb has a small blade between the teeth and shortens the mane by pulling out individual long hairs. The result looks more natural than cut.

What do I need a sweat scraper for?

It effectively removes water and sweat from the coat – after training, when washing, or when your horse comes in from the rain. Saves time and is gentle on the skin.

Which mane comb is suitable for thick manes?

Metal combs with slightly wider tooth spacing excel here. They glide through more easily and break fewer hairs. Ideal for Tinkers, Friesians & Co.

Can I use a sweat scraper in winter?

Of course – especially with wet winter coats, it's worth its weight in gold. Use it to remove water from the coat before putting on a cooler rug. This way, your horse dries faster.
