Functional Bits for Horses with Special Features

Bitshave been used for many decades to improve communication between horseand rider. Since then, manufacturers have been working to adapt the functionality and properties of various bridles to the individual needs of horses. From the design of the bitsto the materials and improved effects, we offer you and your horsea wide range of different bit types with individual functions.

What is a Baucher Bit?

The Baucher bit is also known as a Fillis bit or B-bit. It is securely fastened to the bridle and therefore lies much more quietly in the horse'smouth than other bits. The Baucher bit has no leverage effect on your horse'spoll, but instead acts towards the corners of the mouth. When the reinsare pulled, the strap to which the bitis attached moves outwards. Many horsesrespond to this with better upward carriage. Due to its fixed side pieces, a Baucher bit also has a sideways guiding effect, allowing you to steer your horsewell.

Features & Advantages of the Baucher Bit at a Glance

  • Stable and quiet position in the horse's mouth
  • No leverage or poll action

You can buy Baucher bits in our shop from our manufacturers Trust Equestrianand Stübben SteelTec.

The Sweet Iron Coating from Trust Equestrian

Depending on how sensitive or young horsesare, they may show poor acceptance of the bit. To improve this acceptance, the manufacturer Trust Equestrianhas worked on a special coating and named it "Sweet Iron". The special feature of this coating is that it develops a sweet-tasting surface rust through contact with moisture. This naturally stimulates the horse'schewing activity. Sweet Iron bits can help horsesto foam more and accept the bitsbetter. You can recognize bitsmade of Sweet Iron in our online shop by their blue color. Due to the rust development, the color later changes to silver to grayish or brown.

These are our bestsellers among the Sweet Iron bits from Trust Equestrian:

  • Loose Ring Snaffle Sweet Iron Double Jointed
  • Loose Ring Snaffle Sweet Iron Brass Rings
  • Baucher Bit Sweet Iron Double Jointed

Straight Bar Bits for Unilateral Rein Aids

The market for bitsis very large. In addition to classics like loose ring snafflesor eggbutt snaffles, you can also buy straight bar bits that allow for unilateral aids. Unlike single or double jointed bits, straight bar snaffles have a continuous mouthpiece in the middle that exerts even pressure on the tongue in the horse's mouth; less pressure reaches the edges of the tongue. If the ridergives a unilateral rein aid, one side of the straight bar bit presses on the tongue, while the other shifts towards the palate.

When are Straight Bar Bits suitable for Horses?

Straight bar bits are a good alternative if horsesdo not get along well with jointed bits. The great advantage is that straight bar bits lie quietly in the mouth and the tongue cannot be pinched. Straight bar bits are also suitable for horseswith tongue problems, especially if they have a slight arch in the mouthpiece, which gives the tongue even more freedom. Nevertheless, straight bar bits should only be used by experienced riders. The unilateral rein aids are better received by the horse, but a certain level of training for both horseand rideris required for their use.

Discover the straight bar bits in our shop from top brands. Among the bestsellers is the straight bar bit from our manufacturer Acavallo. This straight bar bit is not made of stainless steel, but of an anti-allergenic plastic. The design of the slightly flattened and curved mouthpiece ensures that the pressure on the tongue and the corners of the mouth is evenly distributed. Due to its quiet and comfortable position in the horse's mouth, this bitis usually very well accepted.

You will also find straight bar bits in our shop from Sprenger, Natheand Beris Bits.

What is a Hackamore?

As an alternative to bitting with a bit, you can also use a hackamore, which allows for bitless bridling. This is especially advisable for horsesthat are sensitive to bits. Used correctly, bitless bridles can be gentler. There are different types of hackamore, such as the Bosal or the mechanical hackamore.

  • Mechanical HackamoreThis hackamore acts with leverage on the chin, noseband, and poll. It therefore has a similar function to a curb bit and should only be used by experienced riderson well-trained horses. Excessive pressure on the reinscan otherwise cause great damage.
  • BosalThis hackamore is primarily used in Western riding as a training bridle. This bridle acts mainly on the noseband, but also on the side of the lower jaw.

In our assortment, you will find hackamores from Stübben SteelTec, Waldhausenand PS of Sweden.

Our Bestseller: The Golden Wings Snaffle 4 in 1 made of Sweet Copper by Stübben

Are you looking for the Ferrari among bridles? Then we recommend our Golden Wings Snaffle 4 in 1 Sweet Copper from our manufacturer Stübben. This is a double jointed snaffle that is very mouth-friendly and prevents pinching of the tongue or the sensitive corners of the mouth.

An innovation are the bit plates on the rings of the snaffle, which establish easier communication between horseand riderand also improve the safety of the snaffle for the horse. They allow the riderdirect influence on the horse, while simultaneously protecting the lip area. This bitcombines the advantages of the loose ring snafflewith the direct action via the bit plates. Especially young and very sensitive horsesaccept this snaffle well. The Sweet Copper material has a pleasant taste and stimulates chewing and salivation, which further improves acceptance.

What is a Pelham?

A Pelham is a very strong functional bit that simultaneously affects the tongue, poll, and lower jaw of the horse. It has additional shanks and a curb chain on the lower jaw for this purpose. When the reinsare pulled, the pressure is evenly distributed over all three areas, so that the riderhas significantly better control and more options for influence. However, the same applies here: A Pelham only belongs in the hands of experienced riders. Under no circumstances should it be used on excitable horsesthat are not yet accustomed to a bit.

You can buy a Pelham in our shop from Beris Bits, Trust Equestrianor Sprenger.
