LED, infrared or halogen – what suits your stable?
The right stable lamp depends on what you want to illuminate. For basic lighting of boxes and stable aisles, LED lights are the first choice: they save electricity, last a long time and provide a clear, bright light. Pay attention to a warm white to neutral white light color – this is pleasant for the horse's eye and for you.
If you need warmth instead of just brightness, an infrared lampcomes into play. It is often used for foals, sick horses or to relax muscles. Important: keep a sufficient distance and never leave it burning unattended.
For outdoors or in open stables, mobile floodlightsare practical. They can be taken anywhere – to the grooming area, in the trailer or to the pasture. Anyone who has a horse in the paddock should also think about suitable paddock accessoriesso that lighting and fencing go hand in hand.
What should you look out for when buying?
Conditions in the stable are harsh: dust, hay, moisture, sometimes even a curious horse's mouth. Therefore, for stable lamps, the following applies:
- IP protection class:At least IP44, better IP65 – so that dust and splash water stay out
- Impact resistance:robust housings, preferably with a protective basket
- Lumen instead of watts:pay attention to the actual brightness, not just the wattage
- Mounting:attach securely out of reach of the horse
- Cables and connections:lay neatly so that no horse can chew on them
If you equip the stable properly once, you will have peace of mind for a long time. Suitable additions can be found in stable suppliesand under other stable and box accessories.
Frequent questions about stable lamps & floodlights
What protection class should a stable lamp have?
In the horse stable, you should at least use IP44, better IP54 or IP65. This protects the lamps against dust and splash water – both of which are plentiful in the stable.
Are LED stable lamps really safe for horses?
Yes. LEDs do not flicker, hardly get warm and are therefore particularly horse-friendly. It is only important that the light is robustly built and mounted out of reach of the horses.
When is an infrared lamp useful?
An infrared lamp provides soothing warmth – for example for foals, older horses, after washing or to relax tense muscles. It does not replace a vet, but can provide good supportive services.
What are the advantages of a mobile floodlight in an open stable?
In an open stable, you rarely have permanently installed lights everywhere. A mobile floodlight – ideally with a battery – can be quickly placed where you need light: at the hay rack, when grooming or when caring for sick animals.
How bright should my stable be illuminated?
As a rule of thumb, about 100–200 lux in the stable aisle and in the boxes. Anyone who scrapes hooves, changes bandages or saddles early in the morning in winter will be grateful for every additional lumen.
